Coach's Introduction
2009 Livermore High School Girls Tennis Team
Hello, my name is Geraldine Romero-Mavis (Coach G) and I am the new Livermore High School Tennis Coach. I am extremely excited to take on this position. Currently, I play tennis completively for Livermore Valley Tennis Club, and I am one of the top players at the club. I am a member of the United State Tennis Association (USTA), play in the Contra Costa Tennis League, and the Ball Area Ladies League (BALL) through out the year. I started playing tennis at a very young age and played all four years in high school and in college.
I am originally from the small town of Holtville in Southern California about 100 miles east of San Diego. The last summer I was there it got to 120 degrees, so I decided to go to college in Northern California. I graduated from Chico State with a degree in Adapted Physical Education and a Masters degree in Recreation Administration. I met my husband at Chico and he grew up here in Livermore and he thought it would be a great place to raise a family. I have one son and he just graduated from the other Livermore High School that I will not mention. For the last 20 years I was a teacher for Hayward Unified School District and due to budget cuts I lost my job in May.
Our 1st practice will be on August 17th from 4:00 to 5:30 pm at Del Valle High School. Practices will be Monday thru Thursday, with Friday is an optional day. Friday will be set aside for challenge matches and/or extra coaching time.
If you have ANY conflict in the practice schedule times please make arrangements to change them or maybe this isn’t the sport for you to try out for. I need your TOTAL dedication to play on this team.

Making the team: In order to make the team you will need to be able to run ten minutes without stopping. The first two weeks we will be having challenge matches and a ladder will be established. On August 27th I will be posting the first cuts of the season by email. Depending on how that goes another one will be scheduled on September 2nd.
Practice will be from 4:00 to 5:30 Monday – Thursday (Friday Optional) More specifically that means ON THE COURT, dressed out, water bottle filled, bathroom done. Once we are on the court at 4:00 there will be NO leaving the court just like in a real match. No filling water bottles and chit chatting and NO cell phones. Be sure you bring a BIG water bottle.
Matches will start in the middle of September and are on Tuesdays and Thursdays (schedule attached). Since we do not have buses for away games we will need parent support.
Challenges After the ladder has been established challenges can take place. Challenges can happen daily until league play begins in September. However, once league begins challenge matches can only take place on MONDAYS or FRIDAYS at our home courts. Here’s how it will work. You may only challenge up ONE spot on the ladder. If you want to challenge another person or team you/partner must have been to practice ON TIME, AND STAYED THE ENTIRE PRACTICE EVERYDAY the week prior or you MAY NOT challenge. Challenges will be 2 out of 3 sets, no add scoring just like regular match play. Challenge match will be first come first serve and must be scheduled with me before the end of practice the preceding week.
ATTENDANCE at school is a must. If you miss school you also miss practice and if it is on a match day your position will be given to another player for that match. You may resume your position on the ladder when returning unless your absence becomes a habit then your position will be in jeopardy.
SNACKS will be provided for our home matches. We will work out a schedule for bringing snacks. It should go without saying that snacks are for everyone and respect should be used to ensure ALL athletes have a reasonable energy boost from the snacks provided. That means if you are not yet on a court do not just sit and “Pig Out”!!!!. Those coming off the courts later will be hungry and should know that snacks will be available to them as well.
Set up and Clean up Our team captains will be responsible for getting practice and match set up on a daily basis. I will use our team roster to assign daily put away and clean up. If everyone helps a little bit each day we will all get home sooner!!!!! Captains will be picked at our Team/Parent meeting September 3rd.
Uniforms will be the same as last year. Once the team roster has been established, we will be able to purchase the uniforms. This would be a great opportunity to purchase a new uniform if yours didn’t fit correctly last year. Keep in mind that this is a school uniform and represents Livermore High School and MUST BE WORN IN A RESPECTABLE MANNER!!!!!! Cost- Tops $25.50 and Skirts $37.50. We will order uniforms at the Team/Parent Meeting.
Physical Cards and Paperwork: Athletes MUST have all the required paperwork turned in prior to being able to participate. League rules NO EXCEPTIONS!!!! I am sure as the year unfolds there will be things that come up that I have not covered here and we can handle them as they occur. However, I thought it important to address some of the basis team guidelines up front so we can have a terrific year. I am looking foreword to a fantastic season.

In order for this season to run smoothly, I need parent’s support. Please, I will need someone to be in charge of Snacks, Transportation, Score Reporting and Team Dinners
