SECOND HALF SURGE NOT ENOUGH AGAINST MUSTANGS

Thanks to Cowboy Nation, the new student section of the bleachers, the atmosphere of the homecoming game was electric from the beginning. The kickoff return by Monte Vista was stopped well shy of the 20 yard line. However, on the first play from scrimmage, the Mustangs used a slot pass to move the ball to the Cowboys 10 yard line. On 3rd and goal, the Mustangs took the lead with a fifteen yard touchdown pass just over two minutes into the game. The Cowboys however, punted the ball away in just four plays.

Monte Vista pushed the ball steadily downfield and celebrated in the end zone again on just four plays to take a quick 14-0 lead. Livermore again could not get the offense moving. Damariay Drew took the ball himself on a nice special teams play for a first down.

The Cowboys offense sputtered for the rest of the first half and Monte Vista tacked on three more touchdowns and a field goal to make the halftime score 37-0.

After an eventful halftime with the announcement of the 2009 Homecoming Queen, Mary Lara, the Cowboys took the ball to start the second half. This was soon followed by a Carter Allen interception and a quick Monte Vista touchdown. The extra point was blocked nicely by Aaron Hanley, who came around the outside untouched.

The offense started to click at that point. Ryan Zaremba had nice runs of twenty six yards and thirty yards to start up the Cowboys’ ground attack. The drive resulted in a six yard touchdown pass from Carter Allen to Marco Torres with 4:59 left in the third quarter. Matt Chaidez added the extra point to give the Cowboys some life, making the score 43-7.

After an attempted onside kick by Livermore, Monte Vista answered with a touchdown of their own. Aaron Hanley blocked another Monte Vista extra point following the score.

Ryan Zaremba ran the ball well to start the Cowboys next drive, with consecutive runs of twenty yards. Carter Allen hooked up with Jackson Lacombe for a gain of forty yards on fourth down. The Cowboys capped off the drive with a touchdown run by Jorge Andrade, sparking life into Cowboy Nation. The two point bid was stopped, and the score was 49-13.

Monte Vista started their drive at the Livermore 49 yard line after another faulty onside kick attempt. The Mustangs drove to the end zone while eating up five minutes off the clock. Aaron Hanley failed to block his third extra point of the contest and the Mustangs took a 55-13 advantage.

Jorge Andrade returned the kickoff all the way to the 47 yard line of Monte Vista. The Mustangs intercepted a Carter Allen pass at the 31 yard line to retake possession. The Livermore defense stepped up and intercepted a pass. Unfortunately, a Livermore player fumbled the interception and the Mustangs recovered the ball. Time expired and the final score was Monte Vista 55-Cowboys 13.

EXTRA POINTS: Matt Chaidez returned from his 1-game suspension and was 0-1 in his field goal opportunities. The JV team lost 28-12 and the freshmen team won at Monte Vista 16-15.
